Old Sayings

This is a list of sayings that I have heard over the years.  If you have some that you think should be added please let me know.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

They don’t have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out of.

A fool and his money is soon parted.

A fly-by-night outfit.

To the victors go the spoils.

They are not worth the powder and matches it would take to blow them to hell.

Slow as molasses.

A hard row to hoe.

Honest as the day is long.

If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.

A day late and a dollar short.

Loose lips sink ships.

All is fair in love and war.

The boss isn’t always right, but he’s always the boss.

Don’t shoot the messenger.

The better the day, the better the deed.

Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.

Red sky at morning, sailor’s take warning.

Strike while the iron is hot.

Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

Blind as a bat.

Nice guys finish last.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Walk in like you own the place.

Common sense ain’t so common.

It’s hell to grow old, but it beats the alternative.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

The early bird gets the worm.

Politician are only lying when their lips are moving.

High as a kite.

It isn’t poured in concrete.

Hotter than either a firecracker or a 2 dollar pistol.

Still waters run deep.

Mess with the bull and you’re going to get the horn.

Colder than a brass bra.

Stop running around like a fart in a windstorm.

Love is blind.

The nut doesn’t roll far from the tree.

Stand your ground.

What I used to do all night, now it takes me all night to do.

Off his rocker.

Straight as an arrow.

If it was easy everyone would be doing it.

We will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Nutty as a fruitcake.

Look before you leap.

It isn’t worth the paper that it’s written on.

Sh__ or get off the pot.

It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.

Another day, another dollar.

You have to get it started if you’re going to get it done.

Hell hath no furry like a woman scorned.

You can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.
